Vector and Photoshop Tutorials ICYMI!Hi Dearhearts!
From time to time I'll pop by with links to my work elsewhere, as I understand there's still a number of users who have just followed this (now) empty gallery as well as users who followed me for years and likely miss a bunch of journal entries due to crazy full inboxes (me too!).
Firstly, here's the last journal entry that explains why I left dA.
Secondly, here's lovely updates of my artwork elsewhere!
Feel free to share these links around, as they contain my backlink while helps with analytics for Tuts+ and a possible boost for me personally.
Enjoy, and thanks for the support!
Leaving deviantArt: Goodbye, Dearhearts! As I'm not really active here and just don't get the site much anymore (in addition to art theft issues with myself and friends over the past 8 years never ending), I've decided it's time to move on to greener pastures.
I've put my work in storage (so it all still exists, just in case I need to bring it out and prove ownership again thanks to publishing dates) and may stop by from time to time to check out others' work, comment, or announce news when applicable.
It's been mostly lovely and I've met such brilliant artists here over the years. Many that I call really good friends. Now that we're all either into our 30s or looking at them (two years left -- feeling so Joey Tribbiani on this: http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lh8rpt0a4d1qf7nz5o1_1280.jpg) the climate here isn't the same for us as it used to be. It's a young person's haven, where the hep cats go to doodle. And it's always been that way. Just haven't got the time to devote to a community that isn't something work-relate
Instagram, Tumblr, Twitter, and New WebsiteAhoy hoy!
I'm not here as often as I used to be, and even so it's to drop a couple things in the gallery and head on out.
As such, you can find my more active below:
New website being worked up. It's live at http://www.acrylicana.com, but missing a great deal of content.
I'll update with new tutorials as they're published.
Vote for me in April's Vector Battle!Hey! So I know a lot of people don't read journals anymore, so hopefully this is seen. My latest tutorial is a part of a vector battle over on Tuts+. It pits me and the fabulous Yulia Sokolova against each other with the theme of "diamonds/crystals".
Check out the voting info here: http://design.tutsplus.com/articles/vector-battle-round-one-diamonds-start--cms-20523
And my tutorial can be seen, in full, here: http://design.tutsplus.com/tutorials/how-to-design-a-gem-swapping-mobile-game-ui-in-illustrator--cms-19862

Tutorial Requests: They are OpenHi!
If there's something drawing or vector-related you'd like to learn, and I haven't done a tutorial on it yet, please comment here (or note or email) with your request.
Whether it's a text treatment style, specific artwork of mine you'd like to learn to create, overall style of art, or specific tools/effects/etc., let me know.
Print Requests - Society6 Shop OpenAhoy hoy For prints of my work, please refer to my Society6 shop: http://society6.com/MaryWinkler
I'll offer prints through Etsy again when I can, but it'll likely be after the new year (or later, depending on when I can spring for a new thing of ink -- awfully expensive).
If you've got a specific request, let me know.
Fashion Illustration Online Course - Enrolling NOW
Great news all! My Skillshare course: Fashion Illustration Basics: From Form to Function is enrolling now!
Please use (and share!) that link to sign up, if you're interested. The course costs $19 USD and spans 5 sections with 8 video lessons.
It's a beginner (or refresher course) level class that focuses on gesture drawing, anatomy and proportions, linework, and completing three fashion illustrations.
I'm also on-hand as much as possible for the next month (the class goes live December 12th, but will remain online forever), or more, with feedback, additional drawings, blog posts/letters on there, etc.
I'd really appreciate it if you can tweet, FB, tumblr, pinterest, etc the hell out of this course, as I'm marketing for the next couple weeks and really hope for a few dozen student at launch.
This is the first online course I've taught, with a more on the way in the new year, and I really hope it goes well so I c
Want more commissions? This journal is for artists who want to get more commissions, or want to open commissions and never had so they don't know how best to present their art, or even for those artists who took commissions before but would appreciate some more tips
There are a few pretty important things to consider before publicly announcing you're opening commissions:
1. payment method. The deviantart commission widget takes 20% of your profit, but then again more deviants have points so you're likely to get 20% more customers like that. But don't forget there are people who have paypal and don't feel like dealing with points so if you decide to open commissions through deviantart, don't let that be the ONLY payment method.
Paypal is the most common payment method used online and i strongly recommend it. Make a paypal account, connect it to a card and you're ready. But don't forget paypal has a limit of $3000 per year withdrawal. So if you're serious about drawing art for a living and you
Why I still draw mangaYou know what's the funny thing about getting older and (apparently) more serious with art? People ask you why you don't 'move on' with it.
Over the last few years, as my interest in art in general grew and I attended more traditional art workshops, the question that was most asked to me was:
"Why don't you move on from that manga style of yours?"
Implying that manga was a childish thing to draw, and that when I wanted to go anywhere more serious with my art, I would better move on to a more mature and realistic style.
Now, as some as you know I have close to no intention to go professional. It would take the fun out of drawing, in my opinion. But it honestly bothers me people see manga in such a negative light nowadays, especially considering we live in an era in which manga artists like yuumei, sakimichan or GENZOMAN (and many others) have build solid careers on their manga drawing skills,
Writing Effective DialogueWe've all struggled through figuring out how to write dialogue that not only gets the information out there, but also helps build characters or advance the plot. There are tons of books and blogs out there on the topic, too. But just reading about it doesn't do much good if we're not ready to try it out. Give it a go and see what other people think. But let's start with the basics.
What is Effective Dialogue?
Dialogue that's written well will reveal character traits, add to the tension and suspense, helps cut down on text walls of description and of course, advances your plot. One of the most important things to keep in mind when you're writing dialogue is that in fiction, your reader doesn't want to read all the mundane things we say on a regular basis. So if it's not moving the plot or adding to your character's personality, you should think about cutting it completely.
What do I mean by reveals character traits?

Inspiration: youtube artists (part 1)Dear, deviantart fellow artists
Hi - so I'm starting new series of journals with useful resources - mainly because I'm running out of topics to write about and I just like some diversity. (I'll continue to post general art/motivational journals too every now and then)
Here are some of my favorite youtube artists, that inspire me and I hope that these resources might be helpful for you too.
'Level up!' is an idea of two Polish artists - Wojtek Fus ( WojciechFus ) and Darek Zabrocki ( daRoz ), who want to teach and learn from each other. Level Up has expanded a host team by amazing Jonas De Ro (JonasDeRo ) There are weekly, 2 to 3-hours long livestreams with critiques, overpaintings and Q&A's. It's so wonderful to watch them paint and talks about important tips on art and life as an artists. Also check out their
Bestest Friend ContestNote: Please mention DreamingAutumn if you have any questions and note her your entries. dA is being a jerk, and having issues, so I can't do much.
CONTEST IS NOW OPEN!
BESTEST FRIENDS ARE AWESOME.
In celebration of my bestest friend DreamingAutumn coming to visit me, we've decided to host a contest! The premise of this contest will be simple, write something to your best friend! It could be anything! Maybe you want to write them a letter telling them how much you care, or a write piece dedicated to them. Maybe you want to write about your favorite memory, your silliest moment, or that time you both laughed so hard your sides hurt because one of you did the Six Little Ducks Dance from Barney. ANYthing!
Want to donate something? Feature, points, pm, a print, something you made? Note either IrrevocableFate or DreamingAutumn.
The Illuminated World ContestStock & Resources
Imagine a world where the soft glow of the magnolia blossoms illuminates the sidewalk. The reaching branches of the tree cast their light over the street, reflected in the gathering puddles of a spring rain. A garden nearby is a riot of colors against the deep shadows of the night. The harsh artificial street lights that we know today are gone. What would your world look like? Is it a world where the need for fossil fuel has been eliminated, or have the scientists bio-engineered the earth into a beautiful apocalypse?
The idea of bio-luminescent plant illumination is a real project in progress by three scientists in San Francisco, California. These scientists are engineering marine bio-luminous bacterial DNA into plants to make them glow. You can read more about their project here: Glowing Plants: Street Lig

The TrundlerThe waste land behind the fire station is always silent. No birds sing there, and even the wild rabbits and feral cats avoid it. Weedy wildflowers nod their seasonal heads in the breeze. Lying fallow in the midst of housing developments, shopping malls, the new movie theater — the vacant lot stands out like a knife wound on a woman’s placid face, shocking, brazen, ugly.
It is always empty. Except for one thing: a ragged heap of old trash, all nasty black tar paper and vicious snarls of rusted wire, car parts and broken glass and other junkyard jetsam. The embodiment of injury waiting to happen, an invitation to a tetanus shot... the city never hauled it away. No one ever wants anywhere near it; it radiates an eerie sense of calculating watchfulness.
And at night, it wanders.
When darkness falls, and the last cars heading into the hives of tract housing stop illuminating the asphalt with moving-picture shadows, it… unfolds. Bitter, broken tangles, grotesquely mov
Inspector Wolf The old lady was dead. I could smell it before I even got into the house. The whole place reeked of adrenaline, sweat, fear, copper and steel. He’d dropped her right in her living room. Chopped and chopped until she stopped moving. But I could tell I was getting close. This had been done in a hurry, and the killer didn’t have the time to clean up after himself like he usually did.
Across the room, the phone rang. The shrill sound set my teeth to grinding, but I ignored it. Instead I followed the killer’s bloody footprints into the back bedroom. He’d climbed out the window. If I hurried, I could catch up to him and end this disgusting spree he was on.
Then the answering machine kicked in. “Hi, Gramma! It’s Red. Sorry I’m running late. I kind of lost track of time. But don’t worry. I packed the picnic and I’m heading out the door right now. Love you.”
She’d been expec
